In a series of posts leading up to October 26th we will be highlighting the various vendors and activities that will be part of the Family History Fair sponsored by the Department of Cultural Resources’ North Carolina Government and Heritage Library, the State Archives of North Carolina and the Friends of the Archives.
Here are libraries and archives that will be part of this year’s Family History Fair:
The State Archives of North Carolina collects, preserves, and makes available for public use historical and evidential materials relating to North Carolina. Its holdings consist of official records of state, county, and local governmental units, and copies of federal and foreign government materials. In addition to these official records are private collections, organization records, maps, pamphlets, sound recordings, photographs, motion picture film, and a small reference library. In all, the Archives houses over 50,000 linear feet of permanently valuable materials containing millions of individual items. The State Archives is part of the Division of Archives and Records, Office of Archives and History and the Department of Cultural Resources.
Cumberland County Public Library in Fayetteville, North Carolina features print, microfilm, and digital materials related to local history and genealogy. Census records, newspapers, and photographs are available in their Local and State History Room.
The Raleigh Family History Center, is a branch of FamilySearch and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Family History Centers provide resources and expertise for genealogical research.
In 2010, Onslow County Public Library began researching local African-Americans who served in the Union forces during the Civil War. The staff used the genealogical evidence to identify living descendants, many of whom were unaware of their ancestors’ military service. The project culminated in a public unveiling of the veterans’ profiles and a celebration of their true legacies of freedom, the family lineages that they created. This study of African-American veterans reveals the power that genealogy has to reconstruct the history of an individual family and to uncover a larger history of a community.
Wake County Public Libraries has an extensive network of materials available to assist those conducting research into historical and genealogical topics. These materials are located in the Olivia Raney Local History Library which also houses the Nonprofit Resource Center and the Business Center.
